Almost two years after the start of the pandemic, nostalgia for “the world before” or at least old habits is leading to an increased awareness of “what really matters”. A good reason not to put off your major travel plans any longer. What could be more important than lived experiences and shared memories?
Whether it’s finally sailing around the world or taking that long haul trip to visit relatives on another continent, in 2022 many people will finally book those important, extreme or even never imagined.
We already see a significant increase in searches for trips to ‘one-of-a-kind’ destinations or experiences, such as Machu Picchu, home of the Incas, with searches for flights to the Peruvian cities of Lima and Cusco up nearly 50 %.
Additionally, research conducted by experts at the height of the pandemic has shown that the most popular destinations are not those one might have previously expected. Top of the list are unique experiences, such as hiking to Mount Everest Base Camp in Nepal.
Tanzania, a country famous for its safaris to see the Big Five in the wild, is an exception in terms of travel demand, with a 36% increase in searches. Visits to the Egyptian pyramids are also high on the wish list, with flights to Petra seeing a 22% increase. There is every reason to believe that this trend will increase, with the Indian Ocean islands and even Antarctica being the subject of growing travel demand.

What’s behind the #friendcation? A new reunion episode of Friends? A new travel trend?
“Spoiler alert”: that’s right. After a long period of confinement and restrictions, spending time with friends has never been more important. It’s a natural trend: having been family-focused lately, you may have only seen your friends recently, briefly, or for the first time in a very long time. And if in addition you have to take a flight to go see them, the reunion may well be long overdue.
