Before the windows are completely dressed, a room never feels truly finished. Window coverings and curtains provide that elegant, finished touch that completely changes a space. Simple curtains made of classic white linen are appropriate for any occasion. Of course, choosing the appropriate draperies is only half the story. The other half is making sure they are held correctly. Determining the fullness or the appropriate height to hold the rod all have an impact on the neighborhood. We’ve put together a quick guide on window curtain sizing and hanging techniques so you can always have that high-end designer look. Here are five design guidelines to help you achieve the right drapery style and sizing.
Curtain sizing and hanging tips
Hang them high
Always hang the rod above the framework as high as possible to give the appearance of a taller, grander window and room. As a general guideline, aim to travel at least 4-6 inches above the framework and, if feasible, a couple of 2-3 inches below the ceiling or crown molding.
Choose the right length curtains
High-water marks are not allowed during this group. When determining the length of your window curtains, try to have a tiny puddle of 1-2 inches for a more casual feel, or rock bottom to lightly touch the ground for a more tailored appearance.
Extend the curtain rod beyond window
Make the most of your view by giving yourself enough space to pull your curtains all the way off the window. Extending your rod past the window on all sides will create the appearance of a larger, wider window while also providing sufficient space for an unhindered view.
Opt for pleated curtains and drapes
For a superior, sophisticated look that goes well with drapery rings, choose a pleated style. There is a huge variety of pleating options available. A french pleat or pinch pleat panel may be our favorite design. To improve the panels’ hanging and sophisticated appearance, we also suggest selecting lined curtains.
Double the fullness
Panels with more fill always look better. To achieve this effect and ensure that the drapes appear spacious even when closed, select panels with a combined width of two to 2.5 times the window’s width.
Choose the right fabric
Select curtain material that complements the room’s purpose as well as its ambiance. Denser fabrics feel more formal and offer more privacy, while lighter blends feel more relaxed and filter light. For drafty windows, try something like heavy velvet. For a breezier feel in the summer, try linen bought from Elite Curtains, providers of curtains, Leeds. For the ideal look, you can even make your own curtains.
Do not go too short
Too-short drapes, unless they’re cafe curtains, resemble high water pants and don’t look good. Stop the fabric just before they hit the floor—a little under an inch is good—if you don’t want to worry about them dragging and getting dirty. A little puddling can be nice if you want a romantic feel.
